Julie Acor Clegg majored in music at Ricks College and at BYU. She has written
several choir arrangements and original compositions for the ward and stake
choirs that she has directed over the years. In 1993 she wrote an arrangement of "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" for her ward choir, based on a piano solo she had written for one of her students the year before. Several people told her it was their favorite song on the Christmas program, without knowing that she had written it. In 2004, Julie wrote the song, "Stand in Holy Places," after searching for a song that encompassed several ideas about the topic, and not finding anything that was already written. She was cleaning house one morning when a melody and the words of the scripture found in Doctrine and Covenants 87:8 started going through her head. She sat down a couple of days later and wrote the chorus that had come to her. A few days after that she wrote the lyrics to all 4 verses in about half an hour, thanks to the inspiration she received, and then added the piano accompaniment and vocal duet part. She did a lot of tweaking until it was in final form, and titled it "Stand in Holy Places." Several people encouraged her to submit it to the LDS Church Music Contest after hearing it. In 2005 she submitted it to the LDS Church Music Contest and won an Award of Merit. After receiving the award for "Stand in Holy Places," and knowing how much people liked both that song and her arrangement of "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel," Julie decided that it might be worthwhile to pursue publishing some of her music. In 2006 Julie decided that she could publish it herself after helping a friend typeset some music that she wanted to publish. Julie published "Stand in Holy Places" in March of 2007, and began distributing it to music stores. Since then she has won awards in the LDS Church Music Contest for each of her violin arrangements that she has entered so far: "Come, Follow Me" (2008), "I Stand All Amazed" (2009), "If You Could Hie to Kolob" (2010), "Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing" (2011), and "I Need Thee Every Hour/Sweet Hour of Prayer" (2012). Julie has also written and published several other violin duet arrangements, a few choir numbers, a few songs based on the annual mutual themes, and a vocal solo arrangement. She plans to write and publish some piano solos and duets in the near future. Julie is married to Jonathan Clegg. They have 6 children, and reside in Midway, Utah. |
